From the Chairman
FOCAS has organised two visits since our last Newsletter, both of which are reported more fully in this issue. I was unfortunately not able to join the visit to Carlisle Cathedral on 7 March, but our thanks to David Bowcock and David Weston for their help with the day, and also to Michele Moatt for organising the event. But I did join the visit to the National Archives at Kew and other places of interest on 20-24 April. It was an excellent week, and many thanks to Ian Jones for all his hard work in making the trip such a success.
The meetings to establish a VCH project in Cumbria continue. It will take us another meeting to complete work on the constitution, but it is hoped that we can begin the crucial work of finding funding for the project.
I have just heard that the Armitt Museum and Library in Amble-side will be closed to the public from 9 May until further notice. Negotiations are still in progress with the University of Cumbria in the hope that the University can take over the running of the Armitt, but no agreement has so far been reached. It will a great pity if the Armitt has to close permanently. It contains a wealth of material on the local history of the Lakes area and on some of its prominent residents over the past 200 years.
