Cumbria Local Studies Libraries

Cumbria Library Service has an excellent online catalogue and also offers access to a range of online resources for its members including Ancestry, British Newspapers and Periodicals,1600-1900, Times Digital Archive etc..

Local Studies Libraries

These contain the following types of materials; County histories (compiled from the 18th century onwards), trade directories (late 18th century to the 1960s), government and local authority publications. Subjects covered are not confined to history but include natural history, planning, social and economic conditions, literature, biography, sport and genealogy. The majority, but not all, of the local studies books, are listed on the online library catalogue

In Barrow and Whitehaven the local studies libraries are colocated as part of the record office.
