Cumbria was formed in 1974 by merging the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland with Lancashire North of the Sands and part of West Yorkshire around Sedbergh. The left hand map below shows where the county is located within Great Britain and the right hand map shows the location of the record offices within the county. It is a very varied county. As well as the world renowned Lake District, there are attractive market towns like Kendal, Penrith, Cockermouth, Ulverston and Wigton, Georgian ports such as Whitehaven and Maryport, and a rich industrial heritage encompassing woodland industries, coal and lead mining, varied quarrying, ship building, iron and steel, cotton, railways and armaments amongst others.
