James Christopherson
Our Treasurer James (Jim to the Membership), died following a short illness, at Furness General Hospital, Barrow in Furness. He was a few days short of his 75th birthday.
Jim was a native of Sawrey and was born at Ulverston Hospital May 1935. He was educated at Ulverston Grammar School. From Grammar School he entered National Service in the RAF as a Radar Technician, then becoming a Regular in the RAF for the next thirteen years. Following his career in the RAF he went work with ‘Airwork International’ as a Radar and Missile Technician spending much of his time in Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf Countries.
On retirement Jim went to live in Flookburgh, and became a pillar of the community, engaged in much of the work of the Parish, treasurer of the Village Hall Committee, involved with the church, and was a very enthusiastic supporter of the RNLI-one of their most effective ‘collectors’. Always seen on RNLI collection days, outside Ulverston Indoor Market with his collecting box.
Further afield Jim was involved with The Cumbria Local History Federation, Cumbria Family History Society, and Friends of Cumbria Archives taking over as Treasurer in 1999, then adding Membership Secretary; finally Keeper of the FOCAS Website. He was active in the organisation of the FOCAS AGM and many other tasks. He will be a very hard act to follow.
The regard in which Jim was held, far and wide in the County was reflected in the high attendance at his funeral at Cark Church. People from many local and county organisations were present to pay their respects.
I would on your behalf thank Jim’s nephew Julian Buckmaster and his wife, for their conduct of the funeral, and their help to all attending.
